Description

Restore the Hunua Ranges. Join a team working on ecological restoration projects at the Hunua Falls in the Mangatawhiri Valley. Projects include checking bait lines in dense bush and track work.

The Hunua Ranges are an area of native forest south east of Auckland City.  Part of the ranges, the Regional Park, are owned and managed by Auckland Regional Council.  The Hunua Ranges cover some 16,000 hectares and contain the largest block of forest on the mainland of the Auckland Region.  Although many large stands of native trees like kauri, matai, kahikatea, tawa, rata and rimu were logged during the last century, they are now regenerating successfully.

The Hunua Ranges support the only northern mainland habitat of the kokako, one of New Zealand’s endemic bird species.  A joint protection programme run in partnership between the Auckland Regional Council and the Department of Conservation helps ensure these birds are given every chance to increase their population.
