Motuihe Island

Motuihe Island is located in Waitemata Harbour, Auckland, and is just 30 minutes by ferry from downtown. The island is 179 hectares, and is the focus of the Motuihe Project, a community programme to restore Motuihe Island to its former glory. Motuihe is managed as a recreation reserve by the Department of Conservation (DoC). The Motuihe Project was established in 2000 by members of the community in conjunction with DoC. It was inspired by the vision of the islands resident concessionaire. A community trust was formed and a Restoration Plan devised to drive the restoration of New Zealands unique flora and fauna to this island. The mission of the Motuihe Trust is to restore, enhance and protect the indigenous flora and fauna and the significant historic sites of Motuihe Island. The success of the island restoration depends on the willingness of volunteers. Volunteer work includes tree planting, weed control, nursery work, biodiversity monitoring, and guiding. For more information about Motuihe visit the Motuihe Project webpage at (http://www.motuihe.org.nz/motuihe/content.aspx?pageid=1).
