About Us

Background

Since our inception in 1999, the New Zealand Trust for Conservation Volunteers has placed hundreds of volunteers in scores of conservation projects throughout New Zealand.

Thousands of hectares of New Zealand are suffering from destruction and neglect. Native wildlife is disappearing. Plant and animal pests accelerate the destruction. Only through the willing efforts of dedicated people can all this be reversed and the great beauty of New Zealand be restored and protected. Learn more.

Our Objectives

  • To maintain registers of projects and volunteers.
  • To support non-profit organisations undertaking conservation projects.
  • To develop training courses for volunteers appropriate to the work involved.
  • To raise funds and obtain sponsorships for the above services.
  • To maintain reciprocal relationships with the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers, the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers and the International Conservation Action Network, for mutual benefit and to assist travelling volunteers.

How you can be involved?

Register your interest by completing and submitting the form provided on this site. This will ensure you are kept informed of Trust activities at whatever level you wish to be involved.

Volunteers

Conservation depends heavily on volunteer participation. There are many people of all ages who are willing to help locally, regionally and internationally. But marrying demand and supply needs effective organisation. To meet this need, the New Zealand Trust for Conservation Volunteers (NZTCV) has created a central database. Individuals who register can be put in touch with organisations running conservation projects overseas. Reciprocal arrangements will allow those registered with the Trust locally to be included overseas.

Resources

By providing an umbrella organisation at a national level, NZTCV will attract resources, including funding and sponsorship, not readily available to smaller or local organisations.

Training

Many conservation organisations already undertake excellent training in fields relevant to them. NZTCV will be able to expand the range of training programmes and eventually offer a level of standards. Co-ordinators will then be able to recruit volunteers with recognised skills.

International Links

Exchange visits

Many volunteers, not necessarily linked to a particular conservation group, welcome the opportunity to relate to the environment at both a local and an international level. NZTCV will help New Zealanders learn more about the global environment. It will also help to share New Zealand environments and cultures with overseas visitors.

Support

The Australian and British Trusts for Conservation Volunteers receive substantial government and corporate sponsor support for their work in training for employment as much as for their conservation projects.

"The Trust for Conservation Volunteers is enormously effective in Britain because it supports every kind of conservation activity and caters for all ages. You have good people behind it in New Zealand and I know it will be as successful here."

David Bellamy; Vice President, British Trust for Conservation volunteers, speaking in Auckland, December 1998.
