Hear the Kiwi at Tawharanui Regional Park

Provider: Conservation Volunteers New Zealand

Region: Auckland

Duration

8 December 2008 - 12 December 2008

Description

Set on a remote peninsula, Tawharanui Regional Park boasts some of the region`s most beautiful white sand beaches, rolling pastures, shingled bays, native coastal forest & regenerating wetlands.

Join us to help in assisting with the control of exotic plant species along Tawharanui’s beaches, and predator control/monitoring within areas of bush and farmland. Track maintenance and construction may also be included .Volunteers will also enjoy a nightly excursion to hear the sounds of the kiwi in the Tawharanui bush.

The name Tawharanui refers to "the abundant bracts of the kiekie vine". The 588 ha. park is NZ`s first integrated open sanctuary (mainland island) where farming, public recreation and conservation of native species combine. A pest proof fence was erected around the peninsula, supported by intensive pest eradication and paved the way for the reintroduction of brown kiwi, robin, whitehead, pateke and forest and green geckos. Tawaharanui is close to offshore islands and also acts as a stepping stone for the dispersal of native birds like Kereru and Kaka. Bellbird for example, colonised Tawharanui from Little Barrier Island in 2006 and are now widespread throughout the park.
